Break Dancing Sunday June 1st | 9:30-11:00 am
Open to all levels
Kate Alsterlund (B-girl Lynx), will introduce basic foundation movements that distinguish this street dance (aka b-boying and b-girling) from all other styles of dance. Lynx will discuss the dance's historical context as well as concepts that can be used to construct movement from a break dancing vocabulary. Lastly, Lynx will encourage students to take what they've learned and "get down in the cipher" (dance in the circle), an important exercise in improvisation that stresses the dance's relationship to the music.
Education
Youth Dancers Master Class
Thursday May 29th | 1:30-2:30
Young dancers just might want to miss a half-day of school to take part in Allen Kaeja's Partnering workshop (described above). This class is open to all young dancers, aged 9-18. Students are encouraged to watch the Noon-Time Series at St. George's Square and then come across the street to Temple Studios to take part in this workshop.
Workshops in Schools:
The GCDF has an impressive history of providing dance to elementary school students, with more than 11, 500 children reached over the past five years. This is a unique chance for students to interact with an established artist and teacher, giving them insight into and appreciation for the art and culture of professional dance. Educators will receive a Teaching Guide, which will assist them in preparing students for their particular dance workshop. The GCDF has developed a changing roster of dancers from which we choose each year, from hip-hop artists who are social activists to contact dancers who can teach you to partner not only with a human, but also the floor. Call us (519.780.2220) to help you find the artist who will best suit your students’ needs.
This series has been graciously funded in part by the Zonta Club of Guelph and Area Foundation.
Talkback Sessions
Join the artists for an informal discussion following the Friday May 31st Mainstage Series A and Saturday June 1st Mainstage Series B performances. Led by a dance animateur, this is a unique opportunity to speak with the dancers about their work.
